CÀ MAU — Shrimp prices remain high in Cà Mau Province due to rising demand and supply shortage, and farmers are making huge profits despite challenges.
Whiteleg shrimp and black tiger shrimp fetch VNĐ215,000 - 220,000 (US$8.35) if they are twenty pieces per kilogramme (ppk) size.
According to Trần Minh Sơn, owner of a 10-hectare super-intensive shrimp farm, shrimp prices have high for the past few months.
At these rates, farmers can earn VNĐ70,000-80,000 per kilogramme, he added.
Dương Tùng Lâm, a shrimp farmer with over 20 years of experience, said despite adverse weather and heavy rainfall this year, his super-intensive shrimp farm has done well due to proactive production management.
With four ponds nearing harvest, he expects to make profits of over of VNĐ500 millions.
Trần Xuân Phong, who uses a tarpaulin-lined pond model, said his profit has been nearly VNĐ500 million.
He said while output is lower than from super-intensive farming, the high price of shrimp ensured a large profit.
According to shrimp traders in Cà Mau, the high prices are due to rising demand in both the domestic market and for year-end exports.
Phạm Văn Mười, deputy director of the local Department of Agriculture and Environment, said the province has 417,992 hectares of shrimp farms with an output of 55,000 tonnes so far this year. — VNS
