HÀ NỘI — Despite outstanding academic achievements and the ability to secure scholarships for overseas study, many top students from specialised high schools choose to pursue international programmes at universities in Việt Nam, with scholarships worth billions of Vietnamese đồng.

New destination for gifted students

At a recent Scholarship Award Ceremony, British University Vietnam (BUV) awarded 150 scholarships to outstanding students, with a total value reaching tens of billions of đồng.

The majority of students receiving scholarships of 50 per cent or higher come from some of the best specialised schools across the country, such as the HUS High School for Gifted Students, HNUE High School for Gifted Students, Chu Văn An High School, Kim Liên High School, Việt Đức High School, Phan Đình Phùng High School, Bắc Ninh Specialised High School, Nguyễn Huệ Specialised High School and Phan Bội Châu Specialised High School (Nghệ An).

A BUV representative stated that all scholarship recipients this year have demonstrated exceptional academic achievements. However, students were selected for scholarships based not only on academic performance, but also on criteria such as dynamism, leadership skills and the ability to inspire others.

With an impressive academic record, including an IELTS score of 8.0, a third-place award in the Nghệ An provincial English competition and a third-place award in the National English Olympiad for specialised schools organised by Hanoi National University, Kiều Lê Khánh An from Phan Bội Châu Specialised High School secured a scholarship from BUV called 'The Founders'.

Sharing her decision to study finance at BUV instead of abroad, Khánh An expressed that studying in Việt Nam allows her to stay close to family and friends while gaining deeper insights into the domestic financial market. She also believes that BUV’s learning environment will equip her with the knowledge, skills and experience needed to realise her dream of becoming an outstanding risk manager, contributing to the sustainable development of Việt Nam’s economy in the future.

Similarities in education quality and learning environment

With a desire to pursue an international academic path, winner of the university's 'British Ambassador' scholarship Nguyễn Khoa Đăng from Bắc Ninh Specialised High School also believes that BUV is an ideal environment for his aspirations.

“After researching, I found that BUV is a university that values dynamism and creativity. Not only does it offer an academic system aligned with UK standards, but its facilities also meet international benchmarks. These conditions allow me to experience an international environment without studying abroad," Đăng said.

A recipient of BUV’s prestigious 'Tech Queens' scholarship, reserved for women pursuing technology fields, Nguyễn Khánh Linh from the HNUE High School for Gifted Students said that she hoped to study in an international environment where she could access the latest knowledge in technology. The opportunity to study in a modern, international setting in Việt Nam, without being far from family, while gaining practical experience daily, aligns perfectly with her goals.

Her mother, Thùy Linh, expressed support for Khánh Linh’s decision to apply to BUV. She said that her daughter initially planned to study abroad. However, after researching BUV, both Khánh Linh and her family recognised it as an excellent choice not only for its internationally standardised academic quality, but also for its commitment to fostering students’ development.

"In particular, the university’s initiative to award scholarships to female students passionate about technology deeply impressed us. I hope my daughter will thrive in this progressive, cutting-edge learning environment," Thùy Linh said.

The increasing number of outstanding students from specialised schools with remarkable achievements pursuing BUV scholarships not only reflects trust in the international-standard quality of education but also highlights a change in perspectives regarding the choice of learning environments among students and parents.

Decisions from many top students to stay in the country indicate a new trend in education: international learning no longer necessarily means studying abroad. Parents and students from specialised schools opt for high-quality academic environments within Việt Nam that still ensure global standards, offer international learning opportunities and are more suitable in terms of finances, culture, psychology and long-term development goals.

BUV is Việt Nam’s first QS five-star university and the first in Việt Nam and ASEAN accredited by QAA, the UK's prestigious higher education quality assurance agency. BUV’s well-designed programmes stay current with industry trends, combining theory and practice to ensure 100 per cent graduate employability or further study within three months of graduation.
