BẮC GIANG — The northern province of Bắc Giang is setting its sights on becoming one of Việt Nam’s leading industrial growth hubs, with a strong focus on high-tech, green and digital industries as it prepares for long-term sustainable development.

With its strategic location and expanding infrastructure, Bắc Giang has emerged as a top destination for both domestic and foreign investors.

According to economist Cấn Văn Lực, the province benefits from close proximity to Hà Nội, international airports, seaports and border gates – ideal conditions for global trade and supply chain integration.

A key driver of this momentum is the province’s rapid industrial expansion. As of now, Bắc Giang has 17 established industrial parks covering over 3,770 hectares, of which eight are fully operational.

From 2021 to date, the province has attracted 190 new secondary investment projects, including 145 foreign direct investment (FDI) projects and 45 domestic ones. The total value of committed investment reached US$7.4 billion during this period.

By the end of 2024, Bắc Giang’s industrial production value is expected to hit over VNĐ576 trillion ($22.3 billion), with projections for 2025 reaching nearly VNĐ730 trillion. The average gross regional domestic product (GRDP) growth rate in the industrial sector is estimated at 19.5 per cent for 2021–2025, placing the province among the fastest-growing in the country.

Bắc Giang’s development strategy now emphasises shifting toward high-tech sectors such as semiconductors, robotics, AI, smart manufacturing, digital infrastructure and renewable energy.

The province is one of the first localities in Việt Nam to host a semiconductor manufacturing plant – run by Hana Micron Vina – and aims to become a national electronics and digital industry centre.

The province is also giving priority to digital industries as a transformative force in production. Widespread adoption of AI, IoT, Big Data and automation is seen as essential to improving efficiency, cutting costs and creating high-tech products and services. Bắc Giang plans to attract more digital firms, nurture digital talent and establish smart factories as part of this push.

In parallel, the province is embracing green industrial development. By promoting energy efficiency, low emissions and clean technologies, Bắc Giang aims to minimise environmental impact while producing high-value, eco-friendly products that meet global standards. This direction not only enhances environmental sustainability but also economic efficiency.

Along with selectively attracting FDI, the province is encouraging large domestic enterprises and building links between local and foreign companies to create a robust industrial ecosystem. This collaborative approach offers long-term benefits for both foreign investors and local businesses.

To support this vision, Bắc Giang has implemented investment-friendly policies, improved administrative procedures and invested heavily in infrastructure.

The provincial master plan for 2021–2030 outlines 29 industrial parks and more than 60 industrial clusters spanning over 10,000 hectares, reflecting the province’s long-term commitment to industrialisation.

Head of the provincial Industrial Parks Management Board Đào Xuân Cường emphasised the importance of coordination between agencies and localities in land clearance, investor support and infrastructure construction. Regular monitoring and problem-solving are essential to keep projects on schedule, he said.

In the first quarter of 2025, the industry-construction sector continued to be the main growth engine, accounting for more than 75 per cent of the province’s GRDP. Electronic products, computers and optics alone contributed over 53 per cent of the sector’s added value, according to the provincial Statistics Office.

Foxconn Việt Nam, one of the province’s major investors, currently operates six large projects in Bắc Giang, employing nearly 80,000 workers.

“Since entering the province in 2007, we’ve grown more than 15 times in revenue, capital and manpower,” said Chou I Wen, general director of Foxconn Việt Nam. “Our success here is thanks to the strong support from local authorities, who treat businesses as trusted partners.”

With strategic planning, strong investor support and an ambitious vision, Bắc Giang is positioning itself as a leader in Việt Nam’s next wave of industrial growth – one that is high-tech, digital and green. — VNS
