HÀ NỘI — All four major network operators — Viettel, MobiFone, VNPT and Vietnamobile — maintained their network performance last month, without recording any significant changes from April.

That's according to the latest data from i-Speed, a speed measurement platform from the Ministry of Science and Technology's Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC).

As a result, the average speed of the national mobile broadband network remained stable, with download speeds reaching 76.86 Mbps and upload speeds reaching 26.98 Mbps.

In terms of rankings, Viettel continued to lead the market, with an average download speed of 88.92 Mbps and upload speeds of 27.36 Mbps.

VNPT ranked second, with speeds of 65.52 Mbps for download and 28.32 Mbps (upload).

MobiFone came in third with 53.07 Mbps and 22.67 Mbps download and upload speeds, respectively; meanwhile, in the last position, Vietnamobile had a download speed of 10.3 Mbps and an upload speed of 6.11 Mbps. 

As for measuring the 5G mobile network, the average national speed decreased slightly last month compared to April, reaching 347.22 Mbps for download speeds and 85.53 Mbps for upload speeds.

Viettel's 5G network took the lead, reaching speeds of 366.29 Mbps for downloads and 87.11 Mbps for uploads. 

Meanwhile, VNPT's 5G network reached 183.71 Mbps and 54.56 Mbps, while MobiFone recorded speeds of 154.46 Mbps and 37.72 Mbps for the two parameters respectively. 

According to statistics for last month, fixed broadband network speeds nationwide continued to grow sharply, marking the fourth consecutive month of improved network quality. 

Specifically, the average download speed reached 187.43 Mbps, continuing to be about one-third faster than in March. Upload speeds also recorded a significant increase, reaching 137.03 Mbps, up from 112.55 Mbps. 

Network quality rankings among service providers showed no major changes last month.

VNPT continued to maintain its top position, with a download speed of 211.35 Mbps and an upload speed of 153.36 Mbps, leading the entire market in fixed network performance.

Among the five major cities of Hà Nội, Hải Phòng, Đà Nẵng, HCM City and Cần Thơ, Đà Nẵng grabbed attention last month when mobile network speeds in the city unexpectedly plummeted to just 125.59 Mbps, a drop of over 50 per cent compared to the 272.97 Mbps recorded in April.

From March to April, Đà Nẵng saw an explosive surge in network speed, by as much as 133 per cent.

The sudden slowdown last month caused the city's mobile network speed to return to levels similar to those before March.

Meanwhile, in other cities and provinces, there were no significant fluctuations in mobile network quality.

Whether they saw slight increases or decreases, the indicators remained stable compared to previous months.

Telecoms service markets regulated by the State

The Ministry of Science and Technology has issued a circular listing the telecommunications service markets regulated by the State and telecommunications companies with a dominant market position in State-regulated service markets.

The list of State-regulated telecommunications service markets includes those on fixed terrestrial telecommunications networks (internet access services); telecommunications services on mobile terrestrial telecommunications networks; voice services and internet access services.

As for the list of companies with a dominant market position in State-regulated telecommunications service markets, the circular stipulates that telecommunications services on fixed terrestrial telecommunications networks (internet access services) are provided by Viettel Group and Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT).

Telecommunications services on mobile terrestrial telecommunications networks, including voice services and internet access services, are provided by Viettel Group, VNPT Group and MobiFone Corporation.

This circular took effect from June 4, and applies to relevant State management agencies overseeing wholesale telecommunications activities, telecommunications service pricing and telecommunications companies.

According to the report by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the total revenue from telecommunications services was estimated at VNĐ147 trillion (US$5.6 billion) last year, an increase of 3.49 per cent compared to 2023.

Of this, Viettel continued to dominate the market with 56.6 per cent of the mobile market share by the end of last year.

The consolidated revenue is estimated at VNĐ189.9 trillion, with pre-tax profits of VNĐ50.4 trillion.

VNPT achieved consolidated revenue of over VNĐ58.5 trillion last year, with mobile services accounting for 34.6 per cent of total revenue and 22.8 per cent of the mobile subscriber market share. MobiFone had a revenue of nearly VNĐ23.5 trillion, holding 18.5 per cent of the mobile subscriber market share.

Mobile Virtual Network Operators, such as Reddi and Gmobile, accounted for 2.1 per cent of the total mobile subscribers, or approximately 2.65 million subscribers. — VNS
