HCM CITY — The Quy Nhơn Port Joint Stock Company on November 28 began the upgrade of wharf No.1, which will enable Quy Nhơn Port to receive ships of up to 30,000 DWT.
The wharf will be lengthened by 35 metres to 480 metres at a cost of more than VNĐ546 billion (US$24 million).
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Phạm Anh Tuấn, chairman of the company, said the upgrade is key to increasing the port’s cargo throughput to 15 million tonnes a year by 2025 from the current 8 million tonnes.
It would also contribute to the socio-economic development of Bình Định Province, the central region and the Central Highlands, he said.
Nguyễn Tự Công Hoàng, deputy director of the Bình Định Province People’s Committee, said the volume of goods passing through Quy Nhơn Port has steadily increased in recent years, making the upgrade of the wharf urgent.
The work is expected to be completed next year and the lengthened wharf will come into operation the following year. —VNS
