Speaking at the investment decision handover ceremony, Nguyen Thanh Nhan, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Kien Giang Province, said: “These are strategic and vital projects that ensure the infrastructure necessary to serve the 2027 APEC Summit, with a substantial total investment. They also serve as foundational drivers that will shape the long-term development, connectivity, and integration of Phu Quoc, Kien Giang, and Viet Nam. The 2027 APEC Summit stands as a pivotal moment to unveil Viet Nam's dynamism, integration, and high potential to the world. Phu Quoc will serve as Viet Nam's premier destination for welcoming the international community, and these investment decisions mark the confident, aspirational, and highly responsible beginning of that endeavor.”
The provincial government also affirmed its commitment to accompany the investor throughout the implementation of the project. The goal is to ensure construction progress and quality adhere to the Government's directives, guaranteeing the airport will be operational in time to serve the 2027 APEC Summit.
Speaking at the ceremony, Bui Thanh Trung, Chairman of Sun Group Southern Region, shared: “Receiving the Government's and local authorities' trust for this strategic national infrastructure project is a deep honor for us.
Leveraging our extensive experience in transport infrastructure development, we are committed to applying the highest standards of quality, speed, and technology to build a modern, smart, and eco-friendly airport that will stand as a world-class international gateway for Phu Quoc.”
“This project is far more than just a piece of transport infrastructure. It is a new symbol, a launching pad that will propel Phu Quoc towards becoming a global hub for ecology, luxury tourism, finance, and innovation beyond the summit. We are fully aware that time is of the essence. With only 18 months remaining for completion, this commitment will serve as Sun Group's guiding principle moving forward,” he said.
Under the approved plan, Phu Quoc International Airport will be upgraded to upgraded to an ICAO 4E rating, enabling it to accommodate wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 747, 787, and Airbus A350. The project entails upgrading the runway system to include an extended 3,500-metrer Runway 1 and a new 3,300-metre Runway 2. This will ensure the safe operation of wide-body aircraft under all weather conditions. The apron system will also be expanded to accomodate more than 100 aircraft parking stands, including 45 dedicated to wide-body aircraft, with modern jet bridge systems integrated.
Phu Quoc International Airport is envisioned as a beacon of architectural and technological advancement within Viet Nam's aviation infrastructure. The airport’s Terminal T2 is designed by the internationally renowned firm CPG Singapore, under the leadership of architect Steven Thor, Executive Vice President of CPG Consultants.
Inspired by the majestic phoenix, a symbol of power and noble beauty, the terminal’s design exudes elegance and strength. What distinguishes this project is its integration of world-leading smart operation technologies, including remote check-in, automated baggage sorting, and biometric identification systems that reduce check-in time to a mere 15–20 seconds per passenger.
Additionally, a new VIP terminal will be constructed to meet the most stringent standards of security, ceremonial protocol, and comfort. It’s specifically designed to cater to the needs of high-profile international events, including the upcoming 2027 APEC Summit.

While Phu Quoc International Airport currently serves as the primary air gateway to the island, its existing infrastructure is operating beyond its designed capacity, especially during peak tourism seasons. In response to this situation, the Government issued Resolution No. 01/2025/NQ-CP on June 1, 2025, approving the airport expansion and authorising the Kien Giang People’s Committee to select a qualified investor and oversee its implementation.
Prior to this, Sun Group had submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Construction to research and invest in the expansion of the airport. The group boasts proven experience in aviation infrastructure, having successfully developed Van Don International Airport in Quang Ninh using a similar model.
More recently, Sun Group also secured Government approval to launch Sun PhuQuoc Airways, a new airline poised to connect the island to economic hubs across Viet Nam and globally. These efforts underscore the strong commitment from national and local leaders, alongside the business community, to elevate Phu Quoc’s capacity to host 2027 APEC Summit and position the island as a leading destination for tourism and economic growth in the region.
