SHENZHEN, China — Smartphone maker OPPO announced the launch of its research institute in Shenzhen, China, on Wednesday.

Along with technology innovation capabilities, the institute will focus on technology pre-research, innovating on user needs with an aim to be at the frontier of industry insights.

“OPPO research institute is the latest investment for our future beyond the existing R&D system. With its various affiliated research centres and our flexible and dedicated research and cooperation with external partners, OPPO will further improve its innovation capabilities,” OPPO CEO Tony Chen said.

“We strive for taking the lead in the development and application of AI (artificial intelligence), 5G and other technologies so that we can continue to offer the perfect products combining art and technology. Our goal is to always satisfy and surpass user needs,” said Chen.

Besides Shenzhen, OPPO also has research centres in Beijing, Shanghai and Dongguan, as well as in Yokohama (Japan) and Silicon Valley (the United States), which produce cutting-edge research work in software, hardware and mobile standards.

OPPO recently announced a partnership with Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, establishing the OPPO-Stanford Collaboration Lab to explore AI technologies and application. In addition to this, OPPO is joining research on 5G with the New York University and many well-known universities in Beijing. 

“The foundation of the OPPO Research Institute demonstrates the company’s persistence and continuous input for technology R&D,” said Levin Liu, director of the OPPO Research Institute.

“The research institute will focus on software, hardware and standards, centring on 5G, AI, image processing and new material with an aim to carry out research and build technology foundation for improving the competitiveness of OPPO products in future,” Liu said.

He added that after the establishment of the OPPO Research Institute, further improvements regarding structure building and talent of the institute would be continued to develop. OPPO would recruit practical-oriented talents with forward-looking vision and academic backgrounds around the globe while maintaining close communication and cooperation with social research institutes and universities around the world, he said.

After years of consistent progress, OPPO is improving its overall R&D capabilities. With technologies such as VOOC flash charge and AI smart photography, OPPO is now at the global forefront of fast charging, photography and other core mobile technology. In future, the OPPO Research Institute will help realise further advanced innovations and transform small breakthroughs to bring about profound new developments in mobile technology.

OPPO is the second-largest mobile phone company in the Vietnamese market in terms of quality, customer service and design. A new OPPO F7 is scheduled for launch in the country on April 12, promising to bring more success for OPPO. — VNS
