BẮC GIANG — Police of the northern province of Bắc Giang announced on Monday they have arrested Nguyễn Đức Minh, 35, for allegedly robbing more than VNĐ1.1 billion (US$48,400) from the Dĩnh Kế branch of the Việt Nam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development last Friday.

Initial investigations have revealed that Minh drove his motorbike on Friday afternoon to the bank’s branch, placed a box-like bomb on a desk, and used a gun to force a bank staff to unlock the security box and hand over the money to him. After taking the money, Minh escaped on his motorbike. He was arrested on Saturday.

The police investigated the bomb and realised that it was a faux bomb. They have recovered some VNĐ900 million ($39,600) that Minh had buried in his mother-in-law’s garden. The gun that Minh used to threaten the bank staff was also seized.

The case is being investigated further. — VNS
