HÀ NỘI — The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced that Vietnamese athletes Nguyễn Tiến Minh and Nguyễn Thùy Linh have qualified for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8.
Minh and Linh won their spots at the Games thanks to their performances with Olympics ranking points.
Minh is ranked 32nd of the 38 male badminton athletes to compete in the Tokyo Olympics and Linh is ranked 25th among 38 women.
“This is an honour for Vietnamese athletes and badminton. Vietnamese badminton is very proud of this news," Lê Thanh Hà, head of badminton section of the National Sports Administration and general secretary of the Việt Nam Badminton Federation, said.
Minh is currently ranked 60th in the world men's singles, while Linh is the world No 49 in the women's singles.
This is the first time the 23-year-old Linh has participated in the Olympics, while the 38-year-old player Minh will set a Vietnamese badminton record by competing in his fourth Games.
With two tickets slots in badminton, the Vietnamese delegation has a total of 10 places for the Tokyo Olympics. The previous eight places were won by Trương Thị Kim Tuyền (taekwondo), Nguyễn Huy Hoàng (swimming), Lê Thanh Tùng, Đinh Phương Thành (gymnastics), Nguyễn Văn Đương (boxing), Đỗ Thị Ánh Nguyệt, Nguyễn Hoàng Phi Vũ (archery) and Lường Thị Thảo and Đinh Thị Hảo (rowing). — VNS
