HÀ NỘI — The Vietnamese women’s team were provided with food by the local Vietnamese community before their match against Australia in the first leg of their play-off for Tokyo Olympics 2020 which was held this afternoon in Australia.

Local Vietnamese families supplied the girls with crab soup, simmered meat, boiled shrimp, stir-fried beef and fruit to encourage them.

The food and cooking methods were the same as at home, so the team ate with gusto.

It is expected that there will be more than 100 overseas Vietnamese at McDonald Jones Stadium to support the Vietnamese team.

Though the away fans will be dwarfed by thousands of Australians, coach Mai Đức Chung said his team would be spurred on by any support they get.

“Wherever we go, we receive the love of the fans, so we have to play well,” said Chung.

It is the first time in history, Việt Nam, world No 32, have made the play-off and stand one step away from the Olympics. — VNS
