HÀ NỘI — The Việt Nam national women’s football team lost to South Korea 3-0 in the final match of Group A of the 2020 AFC Women’s Olympic’s third qualifying round yesterday at the Jeju World Cup Stadium in Seogwipo.
Earlier, both sides booked a place in the play-off round of the Olympic Qualifiers with wins in their opening fixtures.
Group A has only three teams including South Korea, Myanmar and Việt Nam. South Korea beat Myanmar 7-0, while Việt Nam beat Myanmar 1-0.
With this result, South Korea topped Group A and Việt Nam were runners-up.
Việt Nam will meet the winner of Group B, while South Korea will face the runner-up of Group B in the other play-off match.
The two-legged play-off round will be held on March 6 and 11. The two winners will join hosts Japan in the women’s football competition of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in July.
The South Koreans dominated the game from the opening whistle. After twice being refused goals because of the offside flag, the hosts celebrated their opening goal in the 23rd minute thanks to Jang Sel-gi, who beat Vietnamese goalkeeper Trần Thị Kim Thanh with the assistance of the underside of the crossbar.
After the break, South Korea doubled their score through Choo Hyo-joo.
Việt Nam fought back with the hope of earning a goal but were denied by the solid Korean defence.
In the dying minutes, Ji So-yun scored from distance to seal the 3-0 win for the hosts over the Southeast Games champions. — VNS
