Minh makes Vietnam Open quarters

HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Tiến Minh of Việt Nam entered the quarter-finals of the Yonex Sunrise Vietnam Open badminton tournament, winning two matches on Thursday in HCM City.

The national No 1 beat the Open’s No 8 seed Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo of Indonesia 21-15, 21-14. He went on to beat China's Li Shi Feng, the Youth Olympics champion, 23-21, 21-19.

His next match is against No 2 seed Sourabh Verma of India.

Minh is the only local player left in the tournament after three days of games.

On Thursday, his wife and teammate Vũ Thị Trang was defeated 21-15, 20-22, 6-21 by No 5 seed Zhang Yi Man of China in the second round.

Earlier, Việt Nam’s singles and doubles players failed to progress.

The event, which has a total prize pot of  US$75,000, ends on Sunday. — VNS
