National champs begins with first gold to shot put champ

The National Junior Athletics Championships began this morning (Aug 2) in Đồng Nai Province.

HÀ NỘI — The National Junior Athletics Championships began on August 2 morning in Đồng Nai Province.

Athletes will compete in 47 events, of which 23 are for men and women each and a mixed event of 4x400m, at the Đồng Nai Stadium in Biên Hòa City.

The first gold medal of the tournament went to Liêu Thị Hồng Phương of Bạc Liên Province. The 17-year-old topped the women's shot-put event with a score of 12.46m.

Phương in March won a bronze medal at the Southeast Asian Youth Athletics Championships in the Philippines.

She was followed by Huỳnh Ngọc Mỹ of HCM City (11.83m) and Lâm Thị Hồng Cẩm from Sóc Trăng (11.74m).

The championship will end on August 6. — VNS
