HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam bagged four more gold medals at the International Weightlifting Federation Youth World Championships in Las Vegas yesterday.

Bùi Đình Sáng won the gold medal in the snatch division of the men’s 61kg with a result of 113kg, beating Akmolda Sairamkez of Kazakhstan by just one kilogramme.

However, in the clean and jerk category, the 17-year-old finished fifth but did win a bronze medal in the total lift section with a combined weight of 243kg.

In the women’s 45kg, Youth Olympic 2018 silver medalist Nguyễn Thị Thu Trang won three gold medals in three categories lifting 66 kg in the snatch, 75kg in the clean and jerk, a total life of 141kg.

Although enough to secure top spot, Trang’s results in this event has not been her best. At last year’s Youth Olympics, the 15-year-old gained a total lift of 147kg, 72kg in the snatch.

On Saturday, Vietnamese weightlifter Đỗ Tú Tùng won a hat-trick of gold medals and set three new youth world records.

The 15-year-old dominated the men’s 49kg division which was the only weight class held on day one at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino.

Asian youth champion Tú won the overall title with a huge combined lift of 220kg, more than 40kg more than the silver medallist.

This was a youth world record - as were his snatch and clean and jerk lifts of 95kg and 125kg respectively.

Tùng is a rising star of Vietnamese weightlifting. He was born in the northern province of Bắc Ninh which is considered a hotbed for Vietnamese weighters. Beijing Olympic 2008 silver medalist Hoàng Anh Tuấn and world champion Trịnh Văn Vinh were also born in the same province.
