HÀ NỘI — The national football team’s fitness coach Willander Fonseca has resigned from his position.

Earlier, the Brazilian asked his employers the Việt Nam Football Federation (VFF) for permission to temporarily leave his position to take part in an A-level training course of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in Cambodia and then return.

However, the VFF refused Fonseca’s request as Việt Nam are preparing for the upcoming qualifying round of the AFC U23 Championship 2020 to be held at Mỹ Đình National Stadium in Hà Nội from March 22 to 26, prompting his resignation.

Trainer Fonseca arrived in Việt Nam at the end of 2018 to replace South Korean coach Bae Ji-won. He has worked in this field for more than 10 years. He started his career at the age of 20 in Brazil until he moved to work for Thai League 1’s Buriram United in 2015 and the Cambodian national team in 2017.

Besides the fitness coach position, the VFF is seeking a new language assistant for head coach Park Hang-seo.

Earlier, language assistant Phan Duy Tuấn, who travelled with the Vietnamese team in the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 and Asian Cup 2019, also quit his job to focus on teaching in a university. — VNS
