HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese Grandmaster Lê Quang Liêm won the first round of the Spring Chess Classic held in St. Louis, US on Sunday.

The No 1 player, who has Elo rating of 2710, beat Benjamin Bok of the Netherlands (Elo 2638) after 38 moves.

The HCM City-born Liêm will next face Aryan Tari of Norway (Elo 2620).

The event has attracted 10 Grandmasters with the Elo from 2600 level. The No 1 seed is Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine (Elo 2713), while Canadian Eric Hansen has the lowest Elo rating of 2615.

The event is the first of four tournaments each year featuring international chess professionals. Over the course of 10 days, these competitors will battle for more than US$30,000 in prize money and gain valuable experience in top-level events. — VNS
