HA NOI — Grandmaster Lê Quang Liêm of Việt Nam won California’s Bay Area International chess tournament which closed yesterday (Hà Nội time).
The former world blitz chess champion, who was seeded No 1, grabbed seven wins, one draw and one loss, ending with seven points.
He shared top position with Russian Grandmaster Andrey Stukopin. Both enjoyed a bonus of US$4,000 each.
Cuban Grandmaster Lazaro Bruzon came third with 6.5 points.
It was Liêm’s first title of the year. He previously failed at the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship in mid-December in St Petersburg, Russia. — VNS
