HÀ NỘI — Top Vietnamese tennis player Lý Hoàng Nam earned a spot in the second round of the ATP Kobe Challenger tournament in Japan yesterday.
The southern province of Tây Ninh–born Nam came from behind to beat Ji Sung Nam of South Korea 2-1 in the men’s singles first round.
Nam will next take on the winner of the match between Yunseong Chung of South Korea and Jelle Sels of the Netherlands.
The event has a total prize of US$50,000, drawing players in the world’s top 300 including top seed Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan, ranked 81 in the world.
Yesterday also saw Nam rise 40 places to world No 385 in the latest ATP rankings. It is the highest ranking ever for Nam or for any Vietnamese tennis player.
Nam was the runner-up in men’s singles at the recent Việt Nam F4 and F5 Futures – Hải Đăng Cup 2018 in Tây Ninh Province. He triumphed in the doubles category of the F4 event.
In the doubles category, Nam also moved up 73 places to be ranked at No 529. — VNS
