HÀ NỘI — Both the Việt Nam women’s and men’s chess teams had a win in the ninth round to improve their rankings at the ongoing 2018 Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia on Wednesday.

The Việt Nam men’s team beat Swiss 4-0. Following this victory, Việt Nam rose six steps to 12 place out of 185 teams in the world.

Lê Quang Liêm beat Yannick Pelletier and Nguyễn Ngọc Trường Sơn continued to beat Nico Georgiadis. Trần Tuấn Minh and 16-year-old Nguyễn Anh Khôi also defeated their rivals.

In the penultimate round, Việt Nam will face Germany, who are in 16th place, with the aim of ranking in top 10.

On the women’s side, Việt Nam also bested the hosts Georgia 3 3.5-0.5.

Phạm Lê Thảo Nguyên, born in the southern province of Cần Thơ, tied with Nino Khurtsidze. Three other Vietnamese representatives Hoàng Thị Bảo Trâm, Nguyễn Thị Mai Hưng and Bạch Ngọc Thùy Dương also defeated their rivals.

After nine rounds, the Việt Nam women’s team moved to 10th placeout of 150 teams. They will take on Hungary, eighth place, in the 10th round. — VNS
