HÀ NỘI — The Vietnamese team claimed six gold, four silver and two bronze medals on the third day of competition at the 10th ASEAN Schools Games in Selango, Malaysia on Monday.

Vietnamese gymnasts won four golds and four silvers alone.

“Việt Nam met strong rivals such as Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, but we overcame psychological pressure to beat them and win golds,” said Nguyễn Thị Thanh Thúy, head coach of the national gymnastics team.

Ngô Thị Khánh Ny also bagged a gold medal in the women’s 800m, while Lê Tiến Long bagged a gold in the men’s 1,500m.

Vietnamese athletes will continue to compete in the athletics, table tennis and swimming events.

After three days of competition, Việt Nam rank fourth in the medals table with a total of 12 golds, eight silvers and six bronzes.

Malaysia lead with 24 golds, 25 silvers and 20 bronzes, followed by Indonesia and Thailand.

Việt Nam sent 60 athletes to compete at the event, which attracted the participation of 4,000 young athletes from 10 nations including Brunei, Cambodia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines.

Athletes are competing in 11 categories including, athletics, badminton, basketball, gymnastics, squash and aerobics.

The event, which will last until July 26, is an annual competition which aims to enhance friendship among students in the Southeast Asian region. It also seeks to promote ASEAN solidarity through sports and provide opportunities for athletes to engage in cultural exchanges. — VNS
