Hà Nội and HCM City teams win table tennis championships

The Hà Nội male and HCM City female players have won first prizes at the Nhân Dân Newspaper National Table Tennis Championship being held in Đà Lạt City, Central Highlands province of Lâm Đồng.

HÀ NỘI — The Hà Nội male and HCM City female players have won first prizes at the Nhân Dân Newspaper National Table Tennis Championship held in Đà Lạt City, Central Highlands province of Lâm Đồng.

The two teams ended their final matches on Thursday night after beating their rivals with the same score of 3-1.

The Hà Nội male team played against those from the northern province of Hải Dương while the HCM City female team played took on the Military team.

Experts said players in this year’s tournament said there was little to choose between the teams and many matches proved their predictions right as they went to five sets.  

About 135 competitors are taking part in the event which started on May 22 and ends Sunday.

The participants come from 14 teams across the country. They vie for seven sets of medals in the men’s and women’s singles, doubles and team events and the mixed doubles.

At last year’s event, Đinh Quang Linh from the Military team defeated Nguyễn Anh Tú of Hà Nội 4-1 in the final to claim the men’s singles title, while HCM City’s Trang successfully defended her women’s singles crown by defeating Hà Nội’s Nguyễn Khoa Diệu Khánh.

The six-day event is part of activities to mark the 128th anniversary of President Hồ Chí Minh’s birthday which fell on May 19, while seeking to promote table tennis nationwide. — VNS
