HÀ NỘI — No 1 Vietnamese cyclist Nguyễn Thị Thật won a gold medal at the Asian Road and Para Cycling Championship in Myanmar yesterday.
She overcame 26 rivals, including powerhouses from China, Japan and South Korea, to take first place in the women’s 106km road race.
Thật brought into play her strong point of sprinting in the final metres to leave behind Chinese Taipei’s Huang Tung Ying and Chang Yao to win, with a time of 3hr 11.59min.
Thật won a silver medal at the Asian Games in 2014, and a doubles title during last year’s Southeast Asian Games. This was her first continental title.
She will have a three-month training course in Switzerland starting March 1 to prepare for her gold medal competition at the coming Asian Games in Indonesia in August.
Thật’s medal was the second won by Việt Nam at the Myanmar competition. Last Thursday, her junior male teammate, Huỳnh Minh Nghĩa, grabbed a bronze medal in the time trial 22km event. — VNS
