HÀ NỘI — Phạm Cao Cường beat his senior teammate Nguyễn Tiến Minh to take the 27th Iran Fajr International Challenge gold medal yesterday.

Cường, No 2 seed, needed only 39 minutes to knock out the No 1 seed 15-14, 13-11, 11-13, 11-7, in an all-Vietnamese men’s singles final.

It was the first ever time in history that two Vietnamese players played against each other in an international gold medal match.

In the women’s singles, No 5 Muralitharan Thinaah of Malaysia beat her country-fellow Ying Ting Lee who is the top title favourite 11-8, 11-6, 9-11, 11-9, for the crown.

Setayesh Abdolkarimi and Hamedanchi won 11-3, 11-9, 11-5, over Samin Abedkhojasteh and Hediyeh Shams in an all-Iranian women’s doubles final.

In the men’s doubles, Indian Francis Alwin and Kidambi Nandagopal came from behind to beat No 4 Kona Tarun and Saurabh Sharma, also from India, 9-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9. — VNS
