HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Tiến Minh of Việt Nam won his first match at the Việt Nam Open badminton tournament, beating Mek Narongrit of Thailand 21-14, 21-16 yesterday in HCM City.
The No 9 seed will next play No 8 Daren Liew of Malaysia who came from behind to win 16-21, 21-18, 21-9 over NVS Vijetha of India.
Minh had beaten Liew in all six of their previous meetings.
In another men’s singles match, Lê Đức Phát lost 19-21, 9-21 to Kodai Noraoka of Japan.
On the women’s side, Nguyễn Thùy Linh beat Chua Hui Zhen Grace of Singapore 21-15, 21-14 in 35 minutes, while No 4 seed Vũ Thị Trang defeated Hu Ling Fang of Chinese Taipei 21-13, 21-15.
In the mixed doubles, Đổ Tuấn Đức and Phạm Như Thảo advanced to the next round after beating Yantoni Edy Saputra and Marsheilla Gischa Islami of Indonesia 21-18, 21-11. Phạm Hồng Nam and Lê Thu Huyền lost 13-21, 22-20, 13-21 to Wu Yuan Chang and Yang Ching Tun from Chinese Taipei. — VNS
