HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s top female swimmer Nguyễn Thị Ánh Viên, 20, is now the sixth most successful Southeast Asian Games athlete of all time.
At the 29th Games that finished in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on August 30, Viên won eight golds, more than 4,643 athletes to be the top athlete of the Games.
This means Viên now has a total of 19 golds, seven silvers and two bronzes during three Games in 2013, 2015 and 2017, making her the sixth most successful athlete in the history of the region’s largest sporting event.
The top athlete is Joscelin Yeo of Singapore who competed in the Games from 1991 to 2005, winning 40 golds, 12 silvers and three bronzes. Patricia Chan of Singapore is second with 39 golds. Chan took part in the Games from 1965 to 1973. Third is Tao Li of Singapore who participated in the Games from 2005 to now. She bagged 29 golds, one silver and three bronzes.
Singapore’s Joseph Schooling and Ang Peng Siong stand at fourth and fifth place.
Notably, all these athletes are swimmers and the top five are all Singaporeans. — VNS
