HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese top tennis player Lý Hoàng Nam is the No 1 seed in the men’s singles category at the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games being held in Malaysia.
According to the latest Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings, Nam is world No 467 and tops the SEA region.
He has made a big leap in his world ranking in the last two years. The Tây Ninh province-born athlete, who was not even in the top 1,000 in 2015, has now stormed into the top 500.
Nam won the boys’ doubles trophy at Wimbledon 2015 and is being touted as a favourite to bag the medal at the Games’ doubles event.
The tennis events will take place on August 21-26. Participants will join in the men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles categories.
Việt Nam are sending nine players to compete in Kuala Lumpur. They will leave for the Games on Saturday.
Việt Nam haven’t yet won any gold medal in tennis at the largest regional sport event, winning one silver and seven bronze medals at previous editions of the tournament.
