HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam defeated Kazakhstan 25-22, 25-18, 21-25, 20-25, 15-5 in the fifth-eighth place match at the SMM 19th Asian Women’s Senior Volleyball Championship held in the Philippines yesterday.

Việt Nam played very confidently, with Trần Thị Thanh Thúy, captain Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Hoa, Hà Ngọc Diễm and Bùi Thị Ngà all shining.

The Vietnamese already looked poised to sweep the Kazakhs after taking the first two frames until they sputtered midway through the match as Yekaterina Zhdanova and Alessya Safronova pushed forward and propelled the game to a deciding fifth set.

In the decider, however, Việt Nam recovered and never looked back to the satisfaction of their head coach Hidehiro Irisawa, who was cheering the team from the sidelines, from start to finish.

Việt Nam will face the winners of the match between the Philippines and Chinese Taipei in the fifth-seventh playoff today.

Earlier, in the qualifying round, Việt Nam lost to Kazakhstan 25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 20-25. — VNS
