HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese Grandmaster Lê Quang Liêm ranked second at the ongoing St. Louis Rapid & Blitz tournament in the United States on Tuesday.
On the second day of competition, Liêm, world No 23, beat world No 5 Levon Aronian of Armenia. However, he lost to world No 24 Leinier Dominguez of Cuba and tied with Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia, world No 15.
Nepomniachtchi leads the 10 players with four points, followed by Liêm, who was the 2013 world blitz chess champion and runner-up at the World Open 2017 chess tournament.
The tournament’s total prize fund is US$150,000.
Liêm is one of four wildcards at the tournament. This is his first invitation to a Grand Chess Tour event. — VNS
