Nam goes through second round in Thailand Futures

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s Lý Hoàng Nam advanced to the second round in the Thailand F4 Futures tennis tournament in Nonthaburi Province yesterday.

Nam, seeded No. 1, defeated Noh Sang-woo of South Korea 6-2, 6-2 in their first-round match. He will next play Kittirat Kerdlaphee of Thailand, who beat Justin Barki of Indonesia with the same score in another match.

Nam who paired with teammate Nguyễn Hoàng Thiên, however, failed in the first round of the doubles event. The No. 3 seeds lost 1-6, 3-6 to Darren Polkinghorne and Calum Puttergill of Australia.

In the latest tennis rankings, Nam has maintained his No. 471, the highest in his career. Trịnh Linh Giang climbed to No. 1,348 and Thiên dropped three rungs to No. 1,470.

In the youth rankings, Nguyễn Văn Phương, who won a singles title and a silver medal in the doubles event at the Becamex Bình Dương Cup last week, climbed 121 steps to No. 390 in the youth world rankings.

Huỳnh Minh Thịnh, Phương’s partner, jumped from No. 1,517 to No. 1,416. Tất Thái Nguyên ranked No. 1,728, 231 rungs higher than his previous position. — VNS
