HÀ NỘI — In the first day of the Southeast Asian Senior and Youth Taekwondo Championships in HCM City, Việt Nam grabbed 19 golds and topped the medal ranking.
In the seniors’ gyeorugi (sparring) discipline, the host athletes grabbed seven out of 12 titles while they set up domination in the poomsae (performance) events with 12 out of 13 classes.
The tournament has brought together nearly 340 athletes from 10 countries. The martial artists will compete for 172 sets of medals.
According to Kris Wiluan, president of the regional Taekwondo Federation, it is the biggest number of participants in history, proof of strong development for the sport.
The championships at the Lãnh Binh Thăng Gymnasium will end Sunday. — VNS
