HÀ NỘI — Midfielder Phạm Thành Lương has bid adieu to the national football team after Việt Nam’s failure in the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Cup’s semi-finals.

Việt Nam tied with Indonesia 2-2 in the second leg of the semi-final match at Mỹ Đình stadium in Hà Nội on Wednesday, but Indonesia won 4-3 on aggregate after two legs.

“Goodbye to the jersey which I respect the most. Thanks for all,” Lương said on Facebook.

He won’t compete for national team anymore, but will continue playing for V.League 1’s Hà Nội T&T, who have signed him on till 2020.

Lương had been in the national squad since 2008 and played 78 matches for Việt Nam, scoring seven goals.

He has many titles to his credit: he was the best U21 player in 2005, before winning a National Cup title, two V.League trophies, three Golden Balls for the best player of the year and an AFF Cup title in 2008.

Earlier, striker Lê Công Vinh announced that he would retire from competition after this year’s regional football tournament concludes. — VNS
