Junior players win regional silver, qualified for Asian championship

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam won silver at the Southeast Asian Youth Table Tennis Championship and for the first time qualified for the next month's continental tournament.

The Vietnamese U19 boys squad worked hard in the final but lost 3-0 to the hosts Malaysia.

Lai Yong Han gave Malaysia the first point by beating Nguyễn Duy Phong 11-9, 11-6, 8-11, 11-4 before Pang Xiang Jun made it 2-0 after sweeping past Trần Mạnh Cường 11-7, 11-3, 11-4.

Rchard Yap Rui Zhe continued the winning momentum by cruising past Nguyễn Hoàng Lâm 11-7, 11-5, 11-13 to complete the clean sweep at the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Sports Complex in Kuala Lumpur.

Both two teams received their slots at the Asian Youth Table Tennis Championship which will be organised on June 30-July 6 in Chongquin, China.

According to the Vietnamese coaching board the players tried their best. The silver was an historic result for Việt Nam table tennis as it helped the team win a place at the Asian Youth Championship for the first time.

In addition to the silver, Việt Nam also took three bronze medals in the girls' U19, boys' and girls' U15 team events.

Players will continue with singles and pair competitions until May 16. VNS
