HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Anh Tú pocketed a silver medal from the Southeast Asian Table Tennis Championship, which closed on June 28 in Thailand.
Tú took the lead after winning the first two sets but came down in the next three leading to an 11-7, 11-9, 9-11, 6-11, 23-25, 4-11 loss to Chew Zheyu Clarence of Singapore in the men's singles final.
It was the only medal of Việt Nam at the tournament.
Earlier, Vietnamese athletes were ousted from the women's singles and men's and women's team events in the early round.
"Their peak was planned for the SEA Games 31. After the Games, some of the key players suffered injuries. Tú and his men's doubles partner Đoàn Bá Anh Tuấn are injured too. But they still wanted to compete in Thailand," said Phan Anh Tuấn, Table Tennis Department manager of the Việt Nam Sports Administration.
Việt Nam won one gold and four bronze medals last month at the Hà Nội SEA Games.
The national team will return home and continue practising in Hà Nội. They will participate in the World Table Tennis Championship in early October in China. — VNS
