THANH HÓA — V.League 1 side Thanh Hóa Club have secured the services of Australian midfielder Benjamin van Meurs on a four-month contract.
Born in 1998, Meurs has previously played for Canberra FC, Belconnen United, Sydney FC NPL, Sydney Olympic, and Tai Po FC in Hong Kong, China. Most recently, he represented Hải Phòng during the second leg of V.League 1 in 2023 and the AFC Cup.
Coach Velizar Popov of Thanh Hóa was particularly impressed with Meurs' ability to initiate effective attacks. Standing at 1.88m tall, Meurs will provide valuable assistance to Thanh Hóa in dealing with high balls from opponents.
Popov, a Bulgarian coach, acknowledged the challenges of finding a quality midfielder during the middle of the V.League 1 season. Acquiring a player like Meurs, who has prior experience in the league, is considered a safe choice that will help Thanh Hóa address their immediate difficulties.
Apart from Meurs, Thanh Hóa also retain two other foreign players, Rimario Gordon and Luiz Antonio, who have played exceptionally well and played a significant role in the team's success this season. Gordon has scored eight goals, while Antonio has contributed three goals and five assists to his teammates.
Looking ahead, Thanh Hóa are set to face Nam Định on Friday in their upcoming match. VNS
