HÀ NỘI — Weightlifter Trịnh Văn Vinh bagged his first international medals since his world doping ban was over, on February 4 in Uzbekistan.

Vinh successfully took two bronze medals at the ongoing Asian Weightlifting Championship in Tashkent, at the same time strengthening his world position for the Paris Olympics.

Vinh and teammate Nguyễn Trần Tuấn Anh competed in the men's 61kg, an official category of the Olympics.

They were against Indonesian Ricko Saputra, North Korean Pak Myong Jin, South Korean Lee Hyeseong, Turkmen Mirzayev Seyitjan and Ergashev Edkhamjon of the host.

In the snatch, the former world champion could only lift 129kg and failed to enter the top three.

It was Pak who got the gold by lifting 134kg on the third attempt. He was followed by Lee Hyeseong with 131kg and Saputra with 130kg.

In the clean and jerk, Pak continued to show his power, lifting 172kg on the third attempt to take his second gold.

Saputra became a silver medallist, lifting 161kg while Vinh clinched the bronze with a result of 161kg on the last try.

In the total, Pak topped the podium with a total of 306kg. Saputra finished second with 291kg and Vinh bagged his bronze with 290kg.

It was the fourth bronze for Việt Nam at the championship. Earlier, Lại Gia Thành won two in the men's 55kg.

Athletes will continue their competitions until February 10. VNS
