Indonesian marksmen lead shooting medal table

HÀ NÔI — Malaysian shooter Johnathan Guanjie Wong edged out Vietnamese Trần Quốc Cường in a tense competition to win the gold medal in the men’s 10m air pistol at the SEA Games 31 on May 19.

The Malaysian sharpshooters gained 238.6 points, two more than Trần Quốc Cường who came in second in the final ranking.

In the qualifying round, Cường scored 572 points, one point better Wong, but the Malaysian did better in the final round to win gold. 

Indonesia’s Muhamad Iqbal Raia Prabowo scored 214.2 points for bronze.

Cường, 48, who had already won the men’s 50m pistol gold medal on May 16, will retire from the national team after more than 20 years of professional shooting.

However, in the 10m air pistol team event, Cường and his teammates Phan Công Minh and Phạm Quang Huy accumulated 1,713 points – five points clear of the runners-up from Indonesia Muhamad Iqbal Raia Prabowo, Deny Pratama and Wira Sukmana – who came in second. 

The bronze went to Thailand’s Natphanlert Auapinyakul, Peeraphon Chotpaiboonpan and Noppadon Sutiviruch, who scored a total of 1,695 points.

Indonesian shooters are leading the medal tally in shooting events at the SEA Games with four golds, one silver and two bronzes. Việt Nam is chasing with two golds and two silvers, while Singapore has taken one gold, two silvers and one bronze.

Shooters will be competing in the men’s and women’s sports pistol, mobile target rifle and trap shooting till May 22. — VNS
