One child dead, one missing after waterway accident in Sóc Trăng

SÓC TRĂNG — A child has died and rescuers are still trying to find another who is missing following a serious waterway accident in Mekong Delta Sóc Trăng Province.

The incident happened on Monday afternoon in An Thạch Commune, Cù Lao Dung District, the local authorities said.

A barge carrying sand driven by captain Trần Vĩnh Xuyên, 38, from Long Phú District, capsized due to strong waves.

The incident occurred when his wife and three daughters were on the barge.

After being thrown from the vessel, the captain swam to find his wife and three children. He was able to reach his eldest daughter by grabbing hold of a barrel.

The man and his eldest daughter were then rescued by another ferry and taken to Song Phụng port.

Rescue teams and local police were on the scene within minutes and were able to save his wife while she was trapped in the barge's cabin.

Rescuers found a girl’s body about 2km from the scene of the accident but are still searching for the other girl. — VNS
