Small earthquake occurs in Điện Biên

ĐIỆN BIÊN — An earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale hit the northern province of Điện Biên on Tuesday afternoon but caused no damage.

The quake struck at 4:27pm in Nậm Kè Commune, Mường Nhé District, said Nguyễn Thái Sơn, head of the Điện Biên Phủ Seismic Observation Station.

People in Nậm Kè and neighbouring communes felt slight tremors.

According to Sơn, this is the 7th earthquake occurring in the province this year, with the previous tremor on August 24 in Mường Nhé District.

In 2018, the province recorded six earthquakes. Earthquakes often occur in Điện Biên, Điện Biên Đông, Tuần Giáo, Mường Chà and Mường Nhé districts, as well as Mường Lay Town.

According to provincial statistics, Điện Biên Province has recorded three large earthquakes - 6.75 magnitude in 1935, 6.8 magnitude in 1983 and 5.3 magnitude in 2001. However, no heavy damage occurred. — VNS
