HÀ NỘI — Hà Nội will strive to maintain the sex ratio at birth of last year to gradually reduce gender imbalance at birth this year, said Tạ Quang Huy, director of the municipal Department of Population and Family Planning.

Last year the sex ratio at birth was at 113 girls/100 boys.

Experts from the Hà Nội Department of Health said that at present, work related to population and family planning faced several difficulties because the population was high, the area was large, and birth rate reduced but not stable. Moreover, the steering committee on population did not work effectively in several districts and towns.

The capital city will also conduct a project giving early discovery of inborn diseases via premature diagnosis.

The early discovery would help reduce the number of newborns with disabilities, and prevent serious physical and intellectual consequences, said Huy.

Hà Nội will educate the community to raise awareness on developing children’s health and height with balanced nutrition.

Last year, the city had more than 117,700 newborns. — VNS
