ĐỒNG NAI – Six people were killed and another injured in a fire that broke out at a restaurant that was under renovation on Friday in Long Khánh Town in the southern province of Đồng Nai.

Firefighters said the fire broke out when a group of welders and workers were installing a styrofoam ceiling and soundproof material.

The flammable materials caught fire and spread quickly.

With only one door to escape through, the workers sought refuge in the toilet but suffocated.

Phạm Hữu Khánh Duy, the owner of the restaurant, was among the deceased.

Police are investigating the case.

Việt Nam reported more than 2,900 fires in the first nine months of this year, which killed 73 people and caused damage worth around VNĐ1.6 trillion (US$68.6 million), according to the Fire Prevention, Fighting and Rescue Police Department. – VNS
