PHÚ YÊN — Six people have been detained following the bust of the biggest gambling ring ever recorded in the central province of Phú Yên, according to the police on Wednesday.

Colonel Lương Tấn Dĩnh, spokesman of the Phú Yên Police, said that three people were identified as the ring leaders: Lê Bình, 56, Lê Tấn Sang, 26 and Trần Thanh Hoài, 34. They are all Phú Yên locals.

The other three detainees all have criminal histories.

On a rainy Monday night, the police raided big tents set up on a remote hill in Chính Nghĩa Town – about 10km from the province’s capital city of Tuy Hòa.

They caught 95 people, including 38 women, playing gambling games inside the tents. The police seized more than VNĐ168 million (US$7,460) at the scene as well as 30 cars and vans and several motorbikes which were believed to belong to the gamblers.

The players came from various provinces, including Phú Yên, Bình Định, Khánh Hòa, Đắk Nông, Đắk Lắk and HCM City.

Further investigation is ongoing. — VNS
