TÂY NINH — Members of a drug trafficking ring were busted at the weekend transporting a combined 12kg of methamphetamine from Cambodia to Việt Nam at the border in Tây Ninh Province.

Huỳnh Văn Lâm, 37, was caught on Saturday transporting 4kg of meth hidden in tea packages in his motorbike.

He has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

On Sunday police stopped Cambodian-Vietnamese Choun Phi Rin, 41, and Văn Ngọc Phượng, 26, Choun Phi Rin’s sister in law.

More than 8.2 kg of methamphetamine, nearly US$80,000 in cash and a seven-seat car were seized.

Choun Phi Rin is reported to have received 10 years behind bars.

Police are expanding their investigation into the operation.

According to Colonel Lê Hồng Dương, head of Tây Ninh Province’s Border Guards, drug trafficking situation in the province was becoming more complicated.

Traffickers often gather at a casino in Cambodia’s Bavet City, Svay Rieng Province which is opposite Việt Nam’s Mộc Bài International Border Gate, and transport drugs by motorbike at night from Cambodia to Việt Nam. When they’re stopped, they often flee to Cambodia.

Tây Ninh’s border guards have busted 22 drug trafficking cases since the beginning of this year, confiscating more than 25kg of methamphetamine and 12,000 pills, and arresting 35 traffickers. VNS
