A drunk driver in HCM City crashed into several motorbikes and taxis on Sunday night, leaving one person dead and several others injured.

HCM CITY — A drunk driver in HCM City crashed into several motorbikes and taxis on Sunday night, leaving one person dead and several others injured.

The incident occurred at midnight. Witnesses said the BMW was travelling from District 1’s Điện Biên Phủ Street to District 2’s Sài Gòn Bridge and lost control, crashing into motorbikes and taxis waiting at the red light at the Hàng Xanh intersection.

One motorbike driver died on the spot, and dozens of others were hospitalised. A taxi was also seriously damaged.

The driver has been identified as Trần Thị Nga from District 12. According to police, Nga had been drinking beer before she got behind the wheel.

A representative from Gia Định People’s Hospital said they were treating five victims, two of whom had sustained serious injuries. 

One has been identified only as Tài, 23, who suffered brain injury and multiple injuries to the chest, face and stomach. 

Traffic was blocked until 3am this morning.

The case is under further investigation. — VNS
