HCM CITY — Authorities in the southern province of Đồng Nai have decided to dismantle illegal construction works at a big pig farm located on the riverhead of the Đồng Nai River in Định Quán District’s Túc Trưng Commune.

On October 16, the district authorities also slapped a fine on Phan Thị Trâm Co Ltd for the illegal construction on 13,380sq.m pig farm near the Trị An Reservoir.

Trần Nam Biên, deputy chairman of the district People’s Committee, said shortly after the discovery of these illegal facilities in June, authorities had ordered the company to stop construction until they get a licence.

The committee had also imposed a fine of VNĐ40 million, he said.

The company had been given 60 days (from June 20) to get the licence, he said.

However, the company has yet acquired the licence as of October 16, the district authorities decided to dismantle the farm, he said.

The company has not even done a feasibility study to assess the impact the farm would have on the environment, he claimed.

Discharge of wastewater from the farm, which is located less than 300m from the Trị An Reservoir, will pollute the Đồng Nai River, a source of water for people in Đồng Nai Province and HCM City. — VNS
