THÁI BÌNH — A police officer has been detained as part of an investigation into an alleged child gang rape, Thái Bình police announced on Thursday.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Nguyễn Quốc Vương confirmed that Senior Lieutenant Colonel Phạm Văn Lam, vice chief of the economic crime division, was in custody under accusations of sexual assault against a 15-year-old girl.

The 46-year-old policeman was detained along with his alleged partner in crime Từ Minh Tuyên, 47.

Thái Bình police had already arrested two other men implicated in the same crime: Phạm Như Hiển and Phạm Đức Việt, both 44.

On September 2, the police received a missing person report from the family of a ninth-grade girl in Thái Bình City. She was said to have left home days ago with friends, and calls to her phone number were not going through.

While the police were searching for the girl, she returned home ill and showed signs of a mental disorder. The victim said she was gang raped at a hotel on Trần Nhân Tông Street. — VNS
