TÂY NINH — The Military Command, in co-ordination with local authorities in the southern province of Tây Ninh, successfully defused a large bomb in Tân Biên District.

The 220kg bomb is 1.5m long and 27cm in diameter.

The bomb was uncovered at a depth of 1m on September 28 by an excavator driver for Nhài One Member Ltd who was digging a wastewater tank in Thạnh Bắc Commune.

The company informed local authorities and the Military Command, which moved it to another area for deactivation to ensure the safety of residents.

The bomb was identified as an MK82, a model used by the United States Air Force.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Trần Văn Ngọc, head of the Engineering Division of Tây Ninh Military Command, the bomb could have damaged a 100m area if it had exploded.

Government data estimates that roughly 800,000 tonnes of unexploded ordnance remained scattered across the country after the war ended, mostly in the central region.

In the meantime, police in Quỳ Châu District, Nghệ An Province destroyed a large number of homemade weapons and explosives, including 530 homemade guns, 60 gun barrels, 112 electric shockers and dozens of bullets on Thursday.

Some weapons were collected through inspections and others were voluntarily handed over by local residents since 2016.

Colonel Mai Hồng Hà, chief of police for Quỳ Châu District, encouraged people to continue handing over homemade weapons and support tools to ensure security and order in the region. — VNS
