PHÚ QUỐC – In recent years Phú Quốc has seen a big improvement in taxi services as more tourists, investors and property buyers are attracted to the island.
Before 2014 there were only two taxi companies, but now there are five with around 1,000 taxis on the 589sq.km island, including Vinasun, Mai Linh and Phú Quốc Taxi.
More are expected in future.
Phú Quốc Taxi said it had over 300 taxis, while Vinasun started operating last June with 100 vehicles.
Nguyễn Thị Hoa, a tourist, said she had a much easier time now getting taxis on the island than before, and the prices and service quality were better than in HCM City.
Lê Việt Bắc, deputy director of the Kiên Giang Province’s Department of Transports said the taxi companies did a good job, abiding by registration and operation rules and offering competitive fares.
Many taxi drivers in Phú Quốc come from provinces in the Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta region, especially An Giang.
Mai Anh Nhịn, deputy chairman of Kiên Giang People’s Committee recently approved a plan to develop the taxi industry in Phú Quốc until 2025.
By 2025 Kiên Giang’s demand for taxi is forecasted to be around 13,830 rides per day (6,970 rides per day in the mainland area).The province plans to have around 1,161 taxis on the mainland and 1,144 on the island by 2025; in 2030 those figures will increase to1,626 and 1,602 respectively. – VNS
