HCM CITY — Thousands of volunteers marched in HCM City yesterday to mark the 11th Volunteers Day, calling for more funding from the community to support poor students in the city.

The event, which took place at the Phú Mỹ Hưng urban complex in District 7, was jointly organised by the city’s Hồ Chí Minh Communist Youth Union, the Students’ Union and the HCM City Youth Union.

The organisers awarded 130 scholarships worth VNĐ480 million (US$21,300) to poor students living in HCM City.

The event was also a wrap-up to volunteering activities across the city this summer, which helped fix 42km of roads and 17 bridges in the countryside, provided health checks to more than 43,000 poor residents and helped in building and repair of 119 charity houses. — VNS
