ĐÀ NẴNG — Three students drowned while swimming in the waters off Xuân Thiều Beach in Đà Nẵng City’s Liên Chiểu District yesterday, said Đàm Quang Hưng, chairman of the district’s People’s Committee.
The students were identified as Nguyễn Văn Hưng, Lê Phước Nhật and Lê Viết Cường – ninth graders at the Nguyễn Trãi secondary school in Quảng Nam Province.
According to reports, at about 11.30am yesterday a group of 22 students from the school arrived at the Xuân Thiều Beach. Six of them went swimming, including the three who drowned.
Huỳnh Đức Thơ, chairman of the city’s People’s Committee, has asked the district authorities to provide compensation to the families of the victims.
Each family will receive VNĐ3 million (US$132) for the time being, the district authorities said.
The authorities added that they would improve supervision at beaches and send warning messages to residents about the dangerous waters.--VNS
