HCM CITY — The Party, State and the Việt Nam Fatherland Front (VFF) will continue to work closely with religions in general and Catholic followers in particular in building prosperity and promoting national unity, Nguyễn Thiện Nhân, President of the VFF Central Committee said.

Addressing the opening session of the Việt Nam Episcopal Council (VEC)’s 13th congress in HCM City yesterday—also attended by representatives from the Government’s Committee for Religious Affairs and various municipal officials—the VFF leader praised the contributions of Catholic dignitaries and followers to national construction and defence.

While highlighting the patriotism of Catholic followers, he expressed his hope that the VEC would continue promoting solidarity among Catholic communities nationwide.

He also added that the VFF had been offering thoughts and comments on crafting the Law on Belief and Religion to the National Assembly.

When the law is adopted, it will contribute to protecting a citizen’s right to belief and religion, and it will recognise significant contributions of religions to the nation’s development as well, he hopes.
On behalf of the VEC, Archbishop Paul Bùi Văn Đọc thanked the Party, State and the VFF for their wishes to the congress, saying that the five-day congress would work to outline operation programmes in line with the current situation in the country. — VNS
